Pool FAQs

Sun Icon Can I use installation accessories from my old liner? [open]
Triangle

Over time, the material of your installation accessories, such as skimmer gaskets, pool cove, or pool wall foam, can become brittle or degrade. Now is a good time to replace them, to ensure they continue to perform at their best for seasons to come.

Sun Icon What is a pool skimmer and how does it work? [open]
Triangle

A pool skimmer is a built-in fixture that pulls water from the pool’s surface to remove floating debris, such as leaves, bugs, and dirt, before it sinks to the bottom of your pool. It works by using the pool’s pump to create suction, which pulls both water and the debris floating into it.

The debris is trapped in the skimmer basket, while the filtered water is returned to the pool through your pool’s filtration system.

Sun Icon Is there anything I should consider when picking out a skimmer? [open]
Triangle

There are a few key factors to consider when selecting a skimmer.

For above ground pools, the most important thing is picking out the correct size. If you’re choosing a replacement skimmer, the easiest option is to order the same skimmer model to ensure the perfect fit. If that’s not possible, you will want to pick a skimmer that’s the same size or slightly bigger. Since a skimmer system involves a hole cut into your wall, you can’t choose a smaller skimmer.

For inground pools, you need to consider both the dimensions of the skimmer and the surface of your pool. If you have a vinyl or a fiberglass pool, you’ll require a rubber gasket to form a seal between the surface of your pool and the faceplate, but this isn’t necessary for a gunite pool.

For both types of pools, it is essential to consider the pipe size, as mismatched sizing can impact the flow. You’ll also need to consider your state's requirements, as many require a dual pipe to reduce the suction power of the skimmer and drain.

Sun Icon Is there a difference between wide mouth and other skimmers? [open]
Triangle

The main difference is the larger opening of wide-mouth skimmers, allowing them to collect more surface debris and improve skimming efficiency. This is particularly beneficial if you live in an area with lots of foliage, as the larger opening will allow larger leaves to pass through.

Sun Icon What is pool coping, and what does it do? [open]
Triangle

Pool Coping is the finished, protective piece that slides over your liner to pinch it in place, It prevents water from intruding behind the wall and the liner as well.

Sun Icon Do I need to replace the old coping strips when installing a new liner? [open]
Triangle

Whereas this isn't always necessary, you should replace old coping strips if they are damaged. If it is in good condition, you should be able to reuse it after cleaning if needed. However, if the coping isn't in good condition, you need to replace it to ensure that the new liner is installed correctly.

Sun Icon What is cove molding, and what does it do? [open]
Triangle

Pool cove is a wedge-shaped foam that is installed at the bottom perimeter of your above ground swimming pool. It provides a barrier to prevent the pool liner from slipping under the pool wall, while also creating a smooth transition from the pool wall to the pool floor, thereby enhancing both the appearance and integrity of the pool.

Sun Icon Why should I use cove molding over just shaping the ground? [open]
Triangle

Pool cove foam pieces are pre-formed and easier to install than shaping the ground. Due to being preformed, every foam piece is uniformly the same size and shape, making a more consistent barrier between the pool wall and the liner.

Sun Icon What is wall foam, and what does it do? [open]
Triangle

Pool Wall Foam is a protective, high-density foam padding that is installed on the inside of a pool wall to protect the liner from punctures, rust, and corrosion. It creates a smooth, soft barrier between the liner and the metal pool wall, while also providing some insulation benefit to help retain heat.

Sun Icon What are the main benefits of wall foam? [open]
Triangle

Pool Wall Foam adds an extra layer of protection between the soft vinyl of your liner and the metal components of your pool, protecting against punctures from the wall bolts or any other sharp edges of the pool wall.
